US President Donald Trump has commented on reports that the Iranian national team may withdraw from the 2026 World Cup.
Idman.Biz reports that on the morning of February 28, Israel launched a "preemptive strike" against Iran, and a few hours later Trump announced the start of a major military operation.
"Whether or not Iran participates (in the World Cup) doesn't matter to me at all. I think Iran is a country that has suffered a devastating defeat. Their forces are running out," Politico quoted Trump as saying.
Some time ago, the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, announced a possible boycott of the World Cup after the US military operation.
The 2026 World Cup will start on June 11. Iran is in Group A together with Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.
