The Spanish government has not ruled out the possibility of its national team not attending the 2026 World Cup if Israel participates.
Idman.biz reports that Paci Lopez, a representative of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party in Congress, has stated that such a boycott of the 2026 World Cup could be considered in the future.
"We still don't know exactly which teams and countries will participate in the 2026 World Cup. Sports are not and cannot be an island isolated from what is happening in the real world, especially when it comes to massive human rights violations," said Pilar Alegria, a spokesperson for the Spanish government.
She called on international sports federations to boycott Israel.
Earlier, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for the removal of Israeli and Russian athletes from international competitions until the military conflicts in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine are resolved.
Spain is also planning to boycott the Eurovision song contest if Israel participates.
In the World Cup qualifying tournament, Israel is in 3rd place in Group I with 9 points, 6 points behind leader Norway.
The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026 in various cities in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. For the first time, 48 teams will compete in the tournament.
