The Senegalese government has issued a statement denouncing the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations to Morocco and calling for an investigation into alleged corruption within the sporting confederation.
It was previously reported that the Confederation of African Football granted Morocco's appeal and awarded them a 3-0 victory in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal after the latter left the field following a penalty awarded in the 90+8th minute for a foul on Brahim Diaz.
"The Senegalese government expresses its deep indignation following the decision of the CAF Appeals Jury to deprive the Senegal national team of its title of winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and to award it to Morocco.
This unprecedented, exceptionally serious decision directly violates the fundamental principles of sporting ethics, first and foremost the principles of fairness, integrity, and respect for the result acquired on the field. This decision is based on an openly erroneous interpretation of the regulations, leading to a blatantly illegal and unfair outcome. By calling into question the outcome of a match fully played and won in accordance with the Laws of the Game, CAF gravely undermines its own credibility and shakes the legitimate confidence of the African populations in the continental sports bodies.
Senegal cannot accept that an administrative decision undermines probity, dignity, and sporting excellence. The country firmly rejects this attempt to unfairly strip it of its title legitimately acquired. We call for an independent international investigation into suspected corruption within CAF governing bodies.
Furthermore, Senegal intends to exercise all possible appeals, including referrals to competent international courts, to restore justice and sporting outcome.
The government also takes this opportunity to reaffirm the nation's solidarity with Senegalese nationals detained in Morocco following incidents that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations final. It is fully mobilized to monitor the situation with a view to achieving a favorable outcome as soon as possible. Senegal will remain determined, vigilant, and patient in safeguarding the rights of the Senegalese national team and restoring the honor of African sport", stated the Senegalese government's official account on the X social media platform.
