Former French national team midfielder Jerome Rothen criticized the French Football Federation for Kilian Mbappe's failure to travel to the game against Azerbaijan, citing an ankle injury. The veteran footballer made a statement to the "Mundo Deportivo" newspaper about this:
"In the 80th minute of the game against Ukraine, when we were leading 4:0, we asked ourselves, who won't go to Baku under the pretext of injury? Mbappe is the captain of the French national team and receives special treatment. But he also has teammates. Do you really think that players who play as many or more games than Mbappe during the year are not tired and want to play in this insignificant match? No. But they go because they have to.
As long as you win, no one says anything. Making such decisions can cause problems in the locker room, and I am sure that there are players who are tired of such concessions to Mbappe."
It should be noted that the French national team will face our national team in Baku tomorrow in the qualifying round of WC-2026.
