While the entire football world awaits Lionel Messi's future decision, his teammate in the Argentine national team has already made a firm decision.
Idman.Biz reports with reference to "Marca" that experienced defender Nicolas Otamendi has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be his last tournament for the national team.
The 38-year-old world champion, currently playing for Benfica in Europe, has firmly stated his decision:
"After the World Cup, a period with the national team will come to an end. This is my last World Cup, after that I will just be a fan."
Answering questions about his club career, Otamendi recalled that his contract expires in June and briefly replied "we'll see" to the possibility of moving to the Argentine representative River Plate.
Chelsea midfielder Entso Fernandes said he was saddened by his colleague's decision. He emphasized that Otamendi helped him a lot, especially at Benfica, and that he is a great personality. Fernandes also spoke about Messi's possible departure from the national team:
"I have no idea if this will be the last time or not. We always try to enjoy every moment with Leo in the national team to the fullest".
