The French national team stopped competing in the 1/8 final stage of the 2020 European Championship. Kilian Mbappe failed to accurately execute a penalty.
According to Lent.az, citing foreign media, this mistake caused Mbappe's desire to leave the national team.
"They started insulting me. I was thinking: 'For me, the national team is the highest level, and at the same time, if you don't score, they will immediately say bad things to me.' This really changed my approach to the national team."

I said I didn't want to come back. I met with Noel Le Graet (former president of the French Football Federation) and said: "I'm not playing anymore." I thought: "I'm playing for people who call me a monkey if I don't score. I can't play for such people."
Noel Le Graet said: "Do you think I'm going to come out of my office like that and say 'yes'? He told me to forget it," Kilian said.
As a result, Mbappé stayed in the team, and two years later France reached the final of the 2022 World Cup.
