Former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaus spoke about his rivalry with Diego Maradona.
Idman.Biz reports that Matthaus and Maradona have each been world champions once in their national teams. Interestingly, Argentina won the 1986 World Cup final against Germany (3:2), while Germany won against Argentina (1:0) in 1990.
"Diego was the best footballer of our generation. After me, of course. We had a football friendship. Back then, we were like Messi and Ronaldo. Competition makes them great players.
Diego and I were rivals on the field. We fought for our teams and our country. Diego made me stronger and vice versa. We benefited each other," said Matthaus.
