French national team striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has described the 3:1 victory over Azerbaijan in Baku as a dream come true in the national team.
Idman.Biz reports that in an interview with La Chaîne L'Équipe, Mateta said that Azerbaijan started the game very aggressively and put the French in a difficult position in the first minutes:
"Azerbaijan came out on the field with great inner confidence and surprised us in the first ten minutes. But this is football and we had to respond. We understood that we had to win the one-on-one battles, and also the field would not be favorable towards the end of the match," the football player said in an interview with France.
The striker added that playing for the French national team is a great happiness for him and he values every minute:
"I feel completely open in the French national team, this is a real dream for me," said the Crystal Palace striker.
It should be reminded that Mateta scored the first goal of the French in Baku and scored his second goal in two matches since his debut in the "tricolors".
The Azerbaijani national team finished the qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup with one point, finishing last in Group D.
