A local witch doctor in Mali, Karamoqo Sinayoko, has been arrested after the national team's 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Malian fans reportedly paid the witch doctor around £30,000 after he promised to use his spiritual powers to help the team win. After the defeat, around 100 angry fans stoned the false "prophet's" house, and the police were called to the scene. After arriving at the scene, police arrested Sinayoko on charges of fraud. The case is being investigated by the country's cybercrime unit.
The current Africa Cup of Nations champion, Ivory Coast, defeated Nigeria 2-1 in the 2023 final.
