Azerbaijan national team and "Kaiserslautern" player Mahir Emreli has responded to criticism about him.
The 28-year-old forward touched upon the reason for his and other forwards' lack of sufficient productivity in the national team in a video interview with QOL.az.
He attributed this to the team's failure to create many scoring opportunities. M. Emreli also emphasized that he accepts objective criticism as normal:
"Of course, if you are a striker, the focus is more on you. Strikers are the most criticized. This is normal in football. But sometimes our fans have the idea that the members of our national team don't score goals, let's criticize them.
First, we have to think that we are not a national team that constantly creates 10-15 episodes, so let's criticize our strikers for not scoring goals. Of course, fans want to see goals. This is understandable. There is no answer to adequate criticism. But sometimes there is pointless criticism, just to say something. This is done by both fans and some football representatives. It's really an unpleasant situation. Because, as I said, neither the national team before us, nor we create 10-15 episodes in every game so that the strikers are criticized for missing the chance. There is nothing to be angry about or think about here.
No one wants to score more goals than the striker. The national team is completely different. In the national team, it is more important to play for the result and win than to score goals. Sometimes I have dropped from attack to defense to help the team. These are all the requirements in the national team. It is especially important in teams like us. I hope that in 2026 we will be able to change the opinions of our fans at least a little and make them happy by scoring goals."
