Andriy Shevchenko, President of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF), commented on the status of Ukrainian footballers in Europe.
Idman.Biz reports that most European leagues limit the number of transfers of players who are not members of the European Union (EU).
"As is known, most European countries apply quotas to Ukrainian foreign footballers. Our team has collected legal arguments and evidence to correct this. By contacting the associations, we explained that such restrictions constitute discrimination in accordance with the provisions of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU (Article 17). We proposed that these countries reconsider their internal rules.
After negotiations, we reached positive decisions with Spain, France, the Netherlands and Germany regarding competitions where these restrictions were in place. Negotiations with other associations are ongoing. Ukrainian athletes have full European integration and equal access to competitions," Shevchenko is quoted as saying on the official UAF website.
