Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that the Catalan club wanted to bring Lionel Messi back in 2023 when he left PSG.
"I would like to pay my respects to him and erect the monument he deserves. We tried to bring him back in 2023, but Messi decided to move to Inter Miami. The club respected this. We gave Leo a lot, and Messi gave Barcelona a lot, so he deserves a farewell match. Messi is such an iconic figure that he deserves a monument next to Kubala and Cruyff.
There was a time when relations were strained. I am sure he wanted to extend his contract, but there were people around him who were not against him moving to PSG, who offered him a very attractive offer. I am sure Leo wanted to stay. We tried to do it, but Barcelona's financial situation did not allow it. You can always achieve more in life, but this financial situation was critical," Mundo Deportivo quotes Laporta.
