Lionel Messi, the captain of the US club Inter Miami, was very close to returning to Barcelona in the summer of 2023, but the process failed at the last moment.
Idman.Biz reports that sport.es journalist David Bernabeu revealed all the details of why the transfer failed.
According to the journalist, Messi's return was almost completely ready. La Liga initially approved the deal, Xavi approved the project, and the club prepared contract documents for the Argentine football player. Messi himself told Xavi that he wanted to return to Camp Nou and was ready to accept a new role in the team.
However, the situation changed completely a few days later. After Jorge Messi's meeting with the club management, it became known that La Liga would not give final permission for the registration of the contract. The reason was that Barcelona's financial situation at that time did not allow completing this transaction.
For this reason, Barcelona had to stop the transfer process, and uncertainty became a decisive factor for Messi. As a result, the Argentine star chose to move to the USA and signed a contract with Inter Miami.
Messi's decision went down in history as one of the most discussed transfer events of that summer.
