FIFA President Gianni Infantino has intensified efforts to resolve disagreements between the US and Iran regarding the participation of the Iranian national team in the 2026 World Cup.
İdman.Biz, citing "Politico," reports that after the failure of peace talks between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad, the head of the football organization has begun direct contacts with both sides. Infantino is seeking a compromise between Iran, which does not want the games to be held on US territory, and the US, which is indifferent to whether the team comes or not.
It should be noted that the Iranian national team was one of the first to qualify for the World Cup to be held in North America. However, a month ago, the start of US military operations against Iran cast doubt on Tehran's participation in the tournament.
Although the Iranian Minister of Sports demanded that matches scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle be moved to Mexican territory, FIFA rejected this request.
According to a North American football official, Infantino faces two difficult tasks: persuading US President Donald Trump to allow Iran to play on American soil and, at the same time, convincing the Iranian side to play under these conditions.
