"Under the leadership of Aykhan Abbasov, the Azerbaijani national team played good football against Ukraine. Now we need to wait for the match against France. I know it will be difficult. The French national team is always a high-level team. But it is necessary to support the football players and the head coach."
These words were said by Gyoko Hadzievski, the former head coach of the Azerbaijani national team, in an interview with Sportal.az.
Our national team will be a guest of the French national team on October 10 as part of the 3rd round of the qualifying stage of the 2026 World Cup. Hadzievski stated that he does not believe that the "Auxerre tragedy" will be repeated in 1995: "No, I don't believe that the score in Auxerre 30 years ago will be repeated. Recently, there has been an increase in national teams such as the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar. Why shouldn't we expect a successful result from the Azerbaijani national team, which has a team in the Champions League like "Qarabağ"? It is only necessary to prepare the players psychologically well for the game with France. In any case, teams enter the field with 11 people. It is imperative to play disciplined and confidently."
The North Macedonian specialist, who currently manages the "Spartak" (Varna) club competing in the Bulgarian Premier League, talked about the problem in our national team and the upcoming prospects: "After this cycle is over, it is possible to think about the future in connection with the head coach issue. But one thing I know is that the specialist who will be invited to the Azerbaijani national team must be familiar with the mentality of the people and work as if they were working in their own country. Azerbaijani football players should also play at the level of Portugal, Italy, and Croatia. It is necessary to implement good projects in Azerbaijani football."
