Greek FIFA referee Vassilis Fotias has been appointed to officiate an Azerbaijan team match for the second time.
According to "Report", the 36-year-old referee, who will manage the Azerbaijan-Ukraine match in the qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup, will visit Baku again.
The Greek representative of justice previously officiated the match between Azerbaijan's U-21 team and Norway in 2021. At that time, the match held at "Baksell Arena" (now "Neftchi Arena") ended with a 2:1 victory for the guests. Fotias showed yellow cards to Ismayil Zulfugarli, Mustafa Yildirim, and to Leo Hjelde, Sebastian Sebulonsen, and Noah Holm from the visiting team.
Vassilis Fotias has been appointed to UEFA tournaments since 2021. He has previously officiated matches in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Conference League. The FIFA referee has been appointed for the second time in his career to a qualifying match for the main national teams. He was in charge of the Faroe Islands - Moldova match (0:1) in 2023.
It should be noted that the Azerbaijan-Ukraine match will take place on September 9 at 20:00 at the Tofig Bahramov Republican Stadium.
