German politician Jürgen Hardt, a member of the German parliament and ally of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has suggested that Germany could boycott the 2026 World Cup to put pressure on the United States.
"Refusing to participate in the tournament could be considered as a last resort to smarten up US President Donald Trump on the Greenland issue. The tournament is very important to him," Bild quoted Hardt as saying.
Earlier, Donald Trump stated his desire to establish US control over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, and to deploy missile defense systems there.
The 2026 World Cup will be held next summer in three countries - the USA, Canada and Mexico.
