Gennaro Gattuso has left his post as head coach of the Italian national football team.
Idman.Biz reports with reference to the Italian Football Federation that the contract between the parties has been terminated by mutual agreement.
This decision was made immediately after the Italian national team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Gattuso's team lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout in the final of the play-off stage, remaining outside the World Cup for the third time in a row.
In his official statement regarding the separation, the expert thanked the fans:
"It was a great honor for me to lead the national team and to do it together with players who showed great dedication. But my greatest thanks go to the fans, to all Italians, who have spared no love and support for the team during these months."
Massimiliano Allegri and Antonio Conte are mentioned as the main candidates to replace the 48-year-old coach, who has been working with the national team since June 2025. After the failure, the president of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina, and the head of the team's delegation, Gianluigi Buffon, also resigned.
