Former Real Madrid player José Santamaría has died at the age of 96.

Santamaría was born in Montevideo and is a graduate of the local Nacional club. He joined Los Blancos in 1957 and played there until the end of his playing career in 1966. Santamaría won the Uruguayan Championship five times, the Spanish Championship six times, the European Champions Cup four times, and the Intercontinental Cup and the Copa del Rey once each.
As a coach, Santamaría worked for Espanyol and the Spanish national team.
