"In my opinion, the matches between Iceland and Azerbaijan will be intense."
Idman.biz reports that these words were said by Arnar Vidarsson, who was the head coach of the Icelandic national team in 2020-2023, in an exclusive statement to AZERTAC while talking about his country's matches against Azerbaijan in the qualifying round of the World Championship.
He stated that the Icelandic national team has more experience in international tournaments: "Physical strength, team play, and the experience our players have gained in high-level European clubs are our main advantages over our rivals. However, I think that the Azerbaijani national team, coached by Portuguese Fernandu Santuş, can surprise in matches with Iceland. Because anything is possible in football."
The 47-year-old specialist, who currently works as a sports director at the Belgian club "Gent", also mentioned the names of the players he liked in the Azerbaijani national team: "I would especially mention the team's captain Emin Mahmudov, strikers Ramil Sheydayev and Mahir Emreli. They are players who make a difference in the national team."
It should be noted that the Azerbaijani national team will play its first match with Iceland away on September 5, and at home on November 13.
