Former Portuguese national team coach Fernando Santos recalled the advice he gave Cristiano Ronaldo in 2003, on the eve of his transfer from Sporting to Manchester United.

"I was unlucky that I released him in a friendly match with Manchester United at the solemn opening of the club's stadium, and he left. I remember telling him that he would become the best in the world with his skill and dedication.
