The first leg of the Europa League play-off match between "Fenerbahce" and "Nottingham Forest" will attract great attention not only in Istanbul, where the game will be held, but also in Azerbaijan, where "Fenerbahce" traditionally has a large number of fans.
Idman.Biz reports that both teams continue their journey through the transition round, as they finished the league stage of the European Cup without reaching the top eight.
The teams are approaching the game in different situations. "Fenerbahce" maintains its stability in the domestic championship and is among the leaders in the Super League. In the last round, they won 3:2 over "Trabzonspor", and the nature of the game revealed a lot: the team kept the tempo under control, patiently looked for chances, and squeezed the opponent after the break, achieving what they wanted. In general, the Istanbul team's season is built on discipline and tempo control, especially in home games, they rarely allow the match to turn into an open attack exchange.
"Nottingham Forest", on the other hand, faced a more tense background before the trip. A draw with outsider "Wolverhampton" in the English Championship was the last game of the previous coaching staff, after which the club changed head coach. Vitor Pereyra took over the team, and he had almost no time for a full-scale reconstruction. Therefore, the main focus within the team is currently on basic elements rather than tactics: compactness, aggression without the ball, and concentration under the pressure of the away atmosphere.
At the pre-match press conference, Domenico Tedesco also emphasized this factor of uncertainty. According to him, after the change of head coach, it becomes difficult to read the opponent's structure, so "Fenerbahce" has prepared several game options and focused on the strengths of specific "Forest" players, not on a single scheme. In addition, there are certain changes in the Turkish representative's squad: some players are returning to the training process, but the defense line is not yet fully optimal.
Pereyra, on the other hand, prioritizes psychology. He openly talks about the importance of a courageous game and says that the team should not react to the pressure from the stands. For the English club, it is currently more important to maintain organization than to try to fully control the match.
Therefore, the goals are different for the first meeting. "Fenerbahce" will strive for victory without opening up early, through control and gradual pressure. "Nottingham Forest" will be satisfied with any working score that will keep the confrontation open before the return match in England.
In fact, this match will show more of the level of preparation than the difference in class: the home team will check their stability at the Eurocup play-off level, while the guests will try to demonstrate how quickly the new coach's idea turns into a real structure on the field.
The match between the teams will be held at the "Şükrü Saracoğlu" stadium and will start at 21:45 Baku time.
