Norwegian striker Erling Haaland has repeated the record for the number of goals scored in the qualifying stage of the European and World Championships. Sport24.az reports that in the last match of the group stage against Italy (4-1), Haaland scored two goals, bringing his goal tally to 16.
Thus, he repeated the record of Polish Robert Lewandowski, who scored 16 goals in the qualifying round of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The record in this indicator belongs to the former Iranian national team midfielder Karim Bagheri. He scored 19 goals in the qualifying round of the 1998 World Cup.
It should be noted that Norway qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years. They took first place in the group with Italy, Israel, Moldova and Estonia.
