"I couldn't watch the game because I was abroad." These words were said to Sport24.az by former Azerbaijani national team footballer Ceyhun Sultanov.
The former midfielder spoke about the team's 5-0 defeat to Iceland in the D-2026 qualifying round:
"I can't say much about the match. I only know the score. It's a miserable defeat. I think these footballers don't have the potential even to draw, let alone to get out of the group. I said it before, and I'm saying it again today: a local specialist should work with a team with this potential."
Sultanov also spoke about the fate of head coach Fernando Santos in the team: "Santos will not resign. He will wait for AFFA to send him away so that he can receive compensation. I can't say much. Because it's difficult. Our next games will be even more difficult. I wish our team success. This is our national team."
