Another resignation has taken place in the Italian national team.
"Report" reports that Gianluigi Buffon has announced his departure from the position of head of the national team delegation.
The former goalkeeper said in a statement on his social network account that he intended to make this decision immediately after the defeat against the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina:
"I wanted to resign after Italy's defeat away. But I was asked to reconsider my decision. After Gabriele Gravina's resignation as president, I was free to take the step I thought was right."
He noted that the main goal of the team was to qualify for the World Championship with the Italian national team, but this goal was not achieved:
"I think it is more correct for the new leadership to be free to form the next team."
It should be reminded that the Italian national team faced Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-off for a place in the final stage of the World Championship. Although the main time of the match ended in a 1:1 draw, the opponent was more accurate in the penalty shootout and won.
Thus, the Italian national team has been left out of the final stage of the World Championship for the third time in a row. The team last participated in the World Cup in 2014.
The Italian national team has been the world champion 4 times in its history - 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.
It should be noted that Buffon has been working as the head of the national team delegation since 2023.
