Benfica head coach Bruno Lage commented on the sensational defeat (2:3) to Qarabag in the first round of the Champions League group stage.
"This is not the result we wanted. We started the game well, spent the first 30 minutes at a high level. But the first goal we conceded discouraged us. After that, the team struggled, we lost control of the match. We made mistakes that cost us dearly. In the end, we got an unexpected result and this evening ended unsuccessfully," said Lage.
Analyzing the episodes, the coach noted the mistakes in defense: "In the first case, a large gap appeared between Dedić and Antonio Silva, which the opponent took advantage of. Then there was a pass from behind, and when the defensive line rose, a favorable position was created for the opponent."
The coach also emphasized that the team must draw conclusions and react quickly to such defeats: "We must get up, analyze what happened, and understand very clearly both on the field and the moment we are on the field. We must respond correctly as soon as possible."
