The Icelandic Football Association will hold a farewell ceremony for Birkir Bjarnason before their match against Azerbaijan in Reykjavik as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifying stage. Sport24.az reports that the midfielder nicknamed "Thor" is a historical figure for Iceland.
He is the player with the most appearances for the national team. Birkir has scored 15 goals in a total of 113 games. Bjarnason played in the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Cup. He is the author of the first goal in both European and international tournaments in Icelandic history.
Birkir's debut match was in a friendly against Andorra at Laugardalsvöllur in late May 2010, and his last match was against Lithuania in Kaunas in November 2022. The living legend continues his club career with the Italian club Brescia.
It should be noted that the farewell ceremony for Bjarnason will take place on September 5, after the teams' pre-match warm-up exercises.
