It is gratifying that the Azerbaijani national football team has won the international tournament.
According to "Report", the head coach of the Azerbaijani national team, Aykhan Abbasov, stated this at a press conference.
The specialist shared his thoughts after the victory in the penalty shootout (main time 1:1) against the Sierra Leone team in the "FIFA Series – 2026" international tournament:
"I thank the fans. They supported us until the end. The opposing players were a little more energetic than us. We made some mistakes in the first half. In the second half, the players' desire increased. The penalty shootout was interesting for the fans. We are happy to win this tournament. This match gave us signals. As the opponents get stronger, we must also improve. We want to be ready for the UEFA Nations League."
A. Abbasov stated that there is no weak team today: "We would like to make the most of the training camp. We have attracted new players. We will see the benefits of the competition."
The head coach said that the optimal squad for the UEFA Nations League matches has not yet been formed:
"We don't have a big choice. Injuries to some players at that time may complicate our work. We will try to win the UEFA Nations League. We are analyzing Lithuania and Liechtenstein. Lithuania is a strong team. They perform well at home. I think our chances are equal."
