The head coach of the Azerbaijani national team, Aykhan Abbasov, will remain at the helm of the team even after the end of the 2026 World Cup qualifying round. This will not depend on the results that the Azerbaijani national team will show in the upcoming matches.
This was reported to İdman.Biz by informed sources.
Let us remind you that it was previously announced that the contract with Aykhan Abbasov was signed according to the "1+2" system. That is, initially a one-year agreement would be in force, and if the national team scored at least one point in the qualifying games of the 2026 World Cup under his leadership, the contract would be extended for another two years.
However, according to the source, this information does not reflect reality. The AFFA leadership understands that it is difficult for a specialist to fully demonstrate his potential in such a short time. Therefore, Aykhan Abbasov will also continue the preparation process for the UEFA Nations League, which will be held in the 2026/2027 season.
Let us remind you that the Azerbaijani national team will face Iceland in Baku on November 13 and France on November 16, also in the capital, as part of the qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
The current situation in Group D is as follows: France - 10 points, Ukraine - 7, Iceland - 4, Azerbaijan - 1.
