The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) has almost determined the new head coach of the national team.
According to information obtained by Idman.biz, Aykhan Abbasov, the coach of Azerbaijan's U-21 national team, is likely to lead the team.
According to the source, the discussions are currently not about the coach's candidacy, but about the duration of the contract to be signed with him. Two options are being considered: either until the end of the current qualifying round, or a long-term contract will be signed. This issue will be resolved in the coming days and the name of the new head coach will be officially announced.
It should be reminded that Portuguese expert Fernando Santos was dismissed after a 0:5 defeat to Iceland in the first match of the 2026 World Cup qualifying round.
In the match against the Ukrainian national team held in Baku, the Azerbaijani national team was brought to the field by Aykhan Abbasov, the head coach of the youth team and at that time the head of the "Shamakhi" club. Under his leadership, the team showed a decent game and finished the match with a 1:1 draw.
It should be noted that the next matches of the Azerbaijani national team will be held in the qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup: our team will test its strength on the road against France on October 10 and against Ukraine on October 13.
