Murad Akhundov, the press secretary of the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA), has denied media reports that the organization voted in favor of the return of Russian clubs to competitions sponsored by UEFA.
Idman.biz reports that on September 17, news spread that at the meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee held on September 11, Azerbaijan, along with Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Hungary, and Kazakhstan, supported the return of Russian national teams and national teams to the country.
"The information spread in the media is not true. The UEFA Executive Committee did not ask us to express our opinion on Russia's return to European Cups. I would also like to note that such decisions are made at the level of the UEFA Executive Committee, not by the member countries of the organization," TASS quoted Akhundov as saying.
Russian teams have been banned from participating in international competitions since February 2022. The issue of their admission may be considered at the UEFA Congress to be held in Brussels on February 12, 2026. The full restoration of the rights of Russian football is scheduled for discussion at the FIFA Congress to be held on April 30, 2026.
