It has been 89 years since the establishment of the "Neftchi" club. The oldest club in Azerbaijan was founded in 1937 and was called "Neftyanik" until 1968. The team, whose colors are "black and white", has nicknames such as "Flagman", "People's Team" and "Oilmen".
Sport24.az reports that "Neftchi" competed in the USSR championship in 1937, when it was founded. "Flagman", which first won the right to participate in the Strongest League of the USSR Championship in 1949, also competed in this league in 1950, 1960-1972, 1977-1988. The team achieved its greatest success during this period by taking 3rd place in 1966 and winning bronze medals. "Black and whites" were semi-finalists of the USSR Cup in 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971, and finalists of the USSR Football Federation Cup in 1988.
"Neftchi", which has the largest fan base in the country, has won the gold medals of the Azerbaijan championship 9 times – in 1992, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2021. The "People's Team" has won the national cup 6 times (1995, 1996, 1999, 2004, 2013, 2014) and the super cup 2 times (1993, 1995). In 2006, it raised the "Commonwealth Cup" above its head. By qualifying for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League in the 2012/13 season, "Neftchi" made history in Azerbaijani football.
