A large-scale anti-corruption investigation related to Chinese football, which lasted from 2015 to 2021, has been completed.
Chinese authorities have banned 73 people from football for life, including former Chinese Football Association (CFA) president Chen Xuyuan and former national team coach Li Tie.
According to Lent.az, citing foreign media, Chen Xuyuan was sentenced to life imprisonment for bribery, while Li Tie received a 20-year prison sentence for a similar crime.
In addition, 13 clubs were penalized with point deductions. "Shanghai Shenhua", coached by Russian coach Leonid Slutsky, suffered the most severe punishment: the club lost 10 points and was fined one million yuan (more than $140,000).
China has been conducting an anti-corruption campaign in football since November 2022. This has become the largest anti-corruption campaign in the country's history in terms of duration, number of arrests, and the scale of violations uncovered.
Last season, "Shanghai Shenhua", coached by Leonid Slutsky, won a silver medal in the Chinese Premier League, two points behind "Shanghai Port".
The new season of the Chinese Super League will start on March 6.
