Legendary midfielder Wesley Sneijder has returned to the field at the age of 41, even though he ended his career six and a half years ago.
According to Lent.az, citing foreign media, he returned to the field last Saturday afternoon for fourth division club "OSM 75".
The Utrecht footballer would have preferred to return in a more secluded setting, but the local arena was full of fans. In addition to young fans, numerous media representatives attended the game. "With you or without you, I would have had the same fun," Sneijder said.
What made him return to the field and why "OSM 75"? Sneijder's younger brother, Rodney, plays for this team, and his older brother is the assistant coach. Apparently, Wesley enjoyed it: "I still love this most fun game. I would not return to any other club. I do it here, with my family."
Fans who came to Maarssen for Sneijder had to be patient: Sneijder only came on the field in the 70th minute. When he came on, the fans were excited. In addition, he was immediately presented with the captain's armband.
"I thought for a moment, 'Why not just do it?' If you want to and you enjoy football, why not?"
Sneijder also hopes that this will not be a one-time thing. "This has created more desire in me."
This game was very important for "OSM 75" from Maarssenbroek. The team remains a strong contender for the championship. The visiting team was "Fokus 07", which was leading with a five-point difference before the game. The home side eventually won 1-0. Thus, Sneijder and his club reduced the difference with the leader to two points.
