The 35th penalty shootout in the history of the Azerbaijan Cup took place.
"Report" reports with reference to the official website of the Professional Football League that the need for a penalty shootout arose for the first time in the 2025/2026 season.
The fate of the "Gabala" - "Sabah" pair in the 1/4 final stage was decided in this way.
In the duel of rivals who drew 0:0 in Baku and 3:3 in Gabala, the capital representative eventually won – 4:2. This was the 35th penalty shootout in the history of the national cup.
The last such match also took place with the participation of "Sabah". The Baku club was superior to "Turan Tovuz" in the 1/8 final of the 2024/2025 season – 2:2, 3:1.
"Sabah" won the penalty shootout for the second time in the history of the tournament.
"Gabala" faced such an event in a cup match for the 5th time. The team, which has two victories, lost for the 3rd time. The "Red-Blacks" won against "Baku" in the 1/4 finals in the 2007/2008 season (1:1, 1:1; p. - 4:3), and against "Zaqatala" in the 1/8 finals in the 2016/2017 season (2:2, p. - 4:1). Duels against "Neftchi" were unsuccessful in the final in the 2013/2014 season (1:1, p. - 2:3) and in the semi-finals in the 2015/2016 season (1:1, 1:1; p. - 3:4).
