The schedule for the 2025 Intercontinental Cup has been announced.
Idman.biz reports, citing FIFA's official website, that on September 14, Egypt's Pyramids (winner of the CAF Champions League) will face New Zealand's Auckland (winner of the OFC Champions League).
The winner will face Al Ahli (winner of the AFC Champions League) on September 23 in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup will also be played in this meeting.
On December 10, Mexico's Cruz Azul (winner of the CONCACAF Champions Cup) will face the winner of the Copa Libertadores, which will be announced on November 29.
The winners of the second and third matches will compete for a place in the final on December 13, while the winner of the fourth match will face PSG (winner of the UEFA Champions League). The final is scheduled for December 17.
It should be noted that in 1960-1979, the cup was held in two matches, and in 1960-1968, the number of victories was taken into account: if each club won once, a third match was held. This system was used in the Copa Libertadores. Since 1969, the standard European system has been applied, taking into account goals scored away and at home.
Since 1980, only one game has been played at the National Stadium in Tokyo. In 2002-2004, the match was played at the stadium in Yokohama - the arena of the final match of the 2002 World Cup. Then the Intercontinental Cup was replaced by the Club World Cup and was only revived after 20 years.
In 2024, the first cup match in the last 20 years was held at Qatar's Lusail Stadium, and Real Madrid defeated Mexico's Pachuca 3-0. Now the competition will be organized in a new format.
