The Diving Chess World Championship was held in Tarnowo Podgórne, Poland.
Idman.Biz reports that this was the largest tournament in the history of this unusual sport. 62 participants competed in the competition. Chess players made moves with magnetic pieces placed at the bottom of the pool, and after each move they came to the surface to breathe.
The winner of the tournament was 24-year-old Lithuanian Grandmaster Paulius Pultinevičius. Polish Kamil Dzida won the silver medal, and Indian Harshit Raja won the bronze. In the women's competition, Anna Andrzejewska took first place.
Diving chess is a sport that combines traditional chess with the ability to hold your breath underwater. Players descend into the water without using oxygen tanks, make moves, and then surface again. For this reason, not only tactical thinking but also physical endurance play a decisive role in the games.
