McLaren team principal Andrea Stella says the new technical regulations that came into force in Formula 1 this season have created significant challenges for drivers.
Idman.Biz reports, citing "RacingNews365", that the Italian executive particularly emphasized the changes made to aerodynamics and power units, which require a completely different approach from drivers compared to previous years. According to him, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have adapted well to this transition period.
"I'm very pleased with the performance of our drivers in the first part of the 2026 season. The impact of the new rules on Oskar and Lando, as well as the other 20 drivers, has been truly significant. The new generation of bolides requires not only a change in driving style but also a deeper understanding of how to utilize the full potential of the new power units", - Stella said.
The McLaren boss noted that the new power units having more electric power has made the job even more difficult. Reliability issues have also slowed down the adaptation process for drivers.
"The learning process has been complex at times, and especially in the early stages, reliability issues slowed it down. Both drivers reacted correctly and worked very hard with the team. There is still room for development, especially with regards to the power unit", - he added.
Against the backdrop of the new regulations, "McLaren" has also experienced a significant decline compared to previous seasons. The team is in third place in the Constructors' Championship with 220 points after 11 stages and trails leader "Mercedes" by 159 points.
