The 28th international memorial of Honored Coach Afghan Safarov has started, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, World Athletics, and the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation.
Idman.biz reports that about 70 athletes from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Tajikistan are competing in the competition.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation, Maharram Sultanzade, and the sector manager of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Sevda Mirzayeva, spoke about Afghan Safarov's unparalleled services to the development of athletics in our country and noted that the high-status memorial is of great importance for participants before prestigious competitions.
On the first day of the memorial, Ismail Aliyev, who won the men's shot put competition, renewed the Azerbaijani record belonging to Zaur Sadikhov since 1961, with a result of 17.50 meters. Among women in this event, Sakina Hajizade surpassed all her rivals.
Nazim Babayev and Ekaterina Sariyeva rose to the highest step of the podium in the triple jump. Alham Nagiyev and Farida Rzayeva in the 100 meters race for men and women respectively, Novruz Asadli and Lamiya Valiyeva in the 400 meters, and Bakhtiyar Asgarli in the 1500 meters became the winners of the memorial. In the 4x100 meter relay, Oktay Khudiyev, Ruslan Klyukov, Yusuf Abdullayev, Vladimir Borisov among men, and Safiya Karimova, Laman Isfandiyarova, Lamiya Valiyeva, Farida Rzayeva among women won the main prizes.
