UEFA has allowed Milan and Barcelona to play La Liga and Serie A matches abroad.
Idman.biz reports that La Liga had previously requested permission from UEFA to hold the Villarreal-Barcelona match in Miami, USA, while Serie A was interested in the possibility of holding the Milan-Como match in Perth, Australia.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has exceptionally allowed the games of the Spanish and Italian leagues to be held abroad, but stated that local league games must be held in their own countries.
"UEFA today reiterated its unequivocal opposition to domestic league games being played outside their own country.
Following the meeting of its Executive Committee in Tirana last month, UEFA, mindful of requests received from the Spanish and Italian national associations, conducted further consultations with stakeholders to assess the scope of this issue.
These consultations confirmed that there is no support from fans, other leagues, clubs, players and European bodies for the idea of holding domestic league games abroad.
However, given the lack of clarity and detail in FIFA’s relevant regulatory framework currently under consideration, the UEFA Executive Committee has decided to reluctantly approve these two requests on an exceptional basis.
UEFA will actively engage in FIFA’s ongoing work to ensure that future rules ensure the integrity of domestic competitions and the close connection between clubs, their fans and local communities," the UEFA statement said.
