Former Liverpool captain and midfielder Steven Gerrard commented on Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold's exclusion from the England squad for the friendly matches in March. Sport24.az reports that the veteran footballer, speaking to TNT Sports, said the following about Arnold:
"I was very surprised. Yes, we have good options for the right flank defense: Reece James is a world-class player, and Valentino Livramento is injured, but he can play on both flanks. I understand the team's choice, but I think Trent Alexander-Arnold is among the top 35 players in the country.
England has games ahead where they have to play open football, break down defenses with a low block, which is regrettable. Trent Alexander-Arnold is exactly the player who can come off the bench and change the course of the game with one pass. That's his level. That's why I'm surprised, I felt bad for him. But there are other factors to consider: How often does Trent play? Is he in peak form? Are there off-field factors that affect him? A lot of factors need to be considered before selecting a six-week squad."
England will play Uruguay on March 27 and Japan on March 31 in friendly matches.
