Benfica's head coach Jose Mourinho made interesting statements after the 7th round of the UEFA Champions League League stage match against Juventus (0:2). Sport24.az reports that the Portuguese expert spoke about his colleagues.
He said that coaches are selected according to statistics in modern football:
"It used to be believed that the one who earns the most is the best, but that's not the case now. Now the best is the one who can create the most image. There are coaches who try things that don't work and fail. Then they say, "I lost by staying true to my idea." If you lose by staying true to your idea, it's just stupidity.
In 2004, I went to the Premier League as the winner of the Champions League. That year, only two foreign head coaches came to the Premier League. One was me, and the other was Rafa Benitez, who won the UEFA Cup. He won the cup with Valencia and went to Liverpool, and I won the Champions League with Porto and moved to Chelsea.
Today, coaches whose names I don't even know go to the Premier League. I don't say this as disrespect - it's just a fact. Some coaches are selected based on statistical indicators, numbers, not on their victories. Images are formed, and the idea that "playing like this, looking like this" is more important than winning today is sold to people. At this level, things have changed radically."
