Jose Mourinho, the head coach of the Portuguese club "Benfica", admitted that the defeat to "Qarabag" at the start of the Champions League group stage put the team in a difficult position in the tournament standings.
Idman.Biz reports that the Portuguese specialist said this at a press conference held after the match with "Napoli" in the sixth round of the main stage of the UEFA Champions League.
"We have six points. If "Benfica" had not lost at home to "Qarabag" in the first game of the group, we would now have nine points and would be one step away from qualifying for the next stage," J.Mourinho emphasized.
The Portuguese specialist said that this defeat made the team's job difficult.
"The calendar is incredibly difficult, but that defeat immediately put us in an unfavorable position. Therefore, today's victory was extremely important - otherwise the story would end here," he added.
It should be noted that in the 6th round of the main stage of the Champions League, "Benfica" defeated the Italian club "Napoli" 2:0 in Lisbon.
It should be reminded that in the same Lisbon, "Qarabag" won 3:2 over "Benfica" in the first round of the group. It was after this defeat that the Lisbon club dismissed head coach Bruno Laj and appointed Jose Mourinho in his place. We should also add that in the 5th round of the Champions League, the Aghdam team lost to "Napoli" 0:2 away.
