The International Football Association Board (IFAB) may make changes to the rules of the game.
Lent.az reports that the organization has put three new rule changes on the agenda.
While two of these are related to the VAR system, the most notable is the innovation planned in the penalty rule.
According to the new proposal, if a penalty kick rebounds from the post or is saved by the goalkeeper, the game will not continue. That is, neither the football player taking the penalty kick nor his teammates will be able to continue the episode. If the kick fails, the game will be stopped and a goal kick will be awarded to the opposing team.
The other two proposals involve expanding the powers of VAR. Thus, if the referee mistakenly awards a corner kick, VAR will be able to intervene and cancel the decision. Also, the second yellow card shown to the football player can be canceled via VAR.
The proposals will first be officially presented at the IFAB meeting to be held in November, and then will be put to a vote at the general meeting to be held in March 2026.
It should be noted that if the rules are approved, they will come into effect on June 1, 2026, and will be applied at the World Championship hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada.
