Azerbaijani grandmasters Nijat Abasov and Aydin Suleymanli have won silver and bronze medals at the European Individual Chess Championship held in Katowice, Poland.
Idman.Biz reports that in the final 11th round of the continental championship, Abasov drew with Bogdan Dyak (Romania), while Suleymanli shared points with another Azerbaijani representative, Mahammad Muradli.
Thus, Abasov, Suleymanli and Muradli scored 8.5 points each, taking second, third and fourth places, respectively. Ukrainian Roman Dextyarov, who defeated Spaniard David Anton Guijarro in the last round, became the European champion with nine points.
It should be noted that the silver medal of the European Individual Championship is one of the best achievements for Azerbaijani male chess players. Earlier, Teymur Rajabov became the vice-champion of Europe. In the women's competition, Azerbaijan has an individual gold medal won by Ulviyya Fataliyeva.
It is also reported that Nijat Abasov, Aydin Suleymanli and Mahammad Muradli qualified for the 2027 World Cup.
