In 2025, Azerbaijani boxers won 231 medals, which is 50 percent more than the previous year. Sport24.az reports that this was stated by the president of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation, Sahil Babayev, at the event dedicated to the results of this year and the goals for the next year.
Before the event, the Federation's leadership paid tribute to the memory of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev by laying a wreath at his monument.
At the event, Sahil Babayev congratulated the athletes and everyone who contributed to the achievements this year. He noted that the national teams in various age groups won 231 medals in 47 competitions this year, including 69 gold, 60 silver, and 102 bronze.
The President of the Federation noted that serious progress has also been made in official competitions. He stated that our boxers won 60 medals at the European and world championships of the World Boxing and IBA organizations. This is 3.5 times more than the previous year's figure. 19-year-old Subhan Mammadov won both the U-23 European Championship and the world champion title. The number of gold medals won this year also increased by 57 percent to 69. Our female boxers almost doubled the number of medals this year compared to the previous year, reaching 55.
Sahil Babayev said that the material and technical base of our boxing has also been strengthened this year. He noted that the Southern Regional Boxing Center was put into operation in Lankaran, and boxing departments started operating in the Ganja, Gazakh, and Imishli Olympic Sports Complexes. Modern equipment and supplies were provided to clubs and halls in the capital and regions. As a positive result of the work done to develop boxing in the regions, Khumar Jafarli from Shabran won gold medals at the U-15 European Championship, and Gardash Rahimov from Lankaran won at the U-17 European Championship.
The President of the Federation emphasized that Azerbaijani referees adequately represent our country at prestigious international competitions. He highly appreciated the fact that the Boxing Federation, the national boxing team and the head coach, the world champion, and the doctor were distinguished in various nominations based on the results of 2025 held by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Speaking about the plans and goals for 2026, Sahil Babayev said that maximum results should be achieved in the World Cup, European and world championships, which will award license points for the Summer Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles in 2028. He instructed to continue supporting clubs and boxing halls in the regions and Baku, and to start boxing departments in the Olympic Sports Complexes of several districts, and conveyed his congratulations and best wishes to the meeting participants on the upcoming International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis and New Year's holiday.
After the report of the Federation's Secretary General, Naghi Safarov, issues of interest to coaches and boxers were discussed, and recommendations and instructions were given. Certificates of appreciation were presented to boxers who achieved success in 2025 and the head coaches of the national teams.
