Azerbaijani boxers won 231 medals in 2025, 50 percent more than in the previous year.
Idman.Biz reports that this was stated by Sahil Babayev, President of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation (ABF), at the event dedicated to the results of this year and the goals for next year.
Before the event, the ABF leadership laid a wreath at the monument to National Leader Heydar Aliyev and commemorated his memory with respect.
At the meeting, Sahil Babayev congratulated the athletes and everyone who contributed to the success achieved this year. He noted that out of 231 medals won by national teams in various age groups in 47 competitions this year, 69 were gold, 60 were silver, and 102 were bronze.
The ABF President noted that serious progress has also been made in official competitions. He stated that our boxers won 60 medals at the European and world championships of the World Boxing, IBA organizations. This is 3.5 times more than last year's figure. 19-year-old Subhan Mammadov won both the U-23 European Champion and the World Champion titles.
The number of gold medals won this year also increased by 57 percent to 69. Our female boxers have almost doubled the number of medals this year compared to the previous year, reaching 55.
Sahil Babayev said that the material and technical base of our boxing has also been strengthened this year. He noted that the Southern Regional Boxing Center was put into operation in Lankaran, and boxing sections started operating in the Ganja, Gazakh and Imishli Olympic Sports Complexes. Modern equipment and supplies were provided to clubs and halls in the capital and regions. As a positive result of the work done to develop boxing in the regions, Khumar Jafarli from Shabran won gold medals at the U-15 European Championship, and Gardash Rahimov from Lankaran won gold medals at the U-17 European Championship.
The Federation President emphasized that Azerbaijani judges adequately represent our country in prestigious international competitions. He highly appreciated the fact that the Boxing Federation, the national boxing team and the head coach, the world champion and the doctor were distinguished in various nominations based on the results of 2025 held by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Speaking about the plans and goals for 2026, Sahil Babayev said that maximum results should be achieved in the World Cup, European and world championships, which will award license points for the Summer Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles in 2028. He ordered that support for clubs and boxing halls in the regions and Baku be continued, and that boxing sections be opened in the Olympic Sports Complexes of several districts, and conveyed his congratulations and best wishes to the meeting participants on the upcoming International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis and New Year holiday.
After the report of the Secretary General of the Federation, Nagi Safarov, issues of interest to coaches and boxers were discussed, recommendations and instructions were given. Certificates of appreciation were presented to boxers and head coaches of national teams who achieved success in 2025.
