Jamal Bey, an American legionnaire of the "Neftchi" basketball club, has had a productive season. He was the player with the most accurate long-range shots in the Azerbaijan Basketball League, helped his team reach the semi-finals, and participated in the European Cup games.
Jamal Bey shared his impressions of his career in Baku with Idman.Biz.
- How would you rate the past season? What worked, what didn't?
- I think we had a pretty good year. We had a lot of great games, and the team developed during the championship. I personally felt like I was improving from game to game. I'm sure my teammates feel the same way. Of course, you always want more, especially when you're one step away from the final. But overall, I think we showed character and played decent basketball.
- You had the best three-point percentage in the league. Was this somewhat unexpected?
- Maybe it is to some extent. I always work hard on my shots and know that it's one of my strengths. But there were quite a few strong snipers in the league. That's why it's especially nice to be at the top of such statistics. This is the result of daily work, as well as the trust that teammates and coaches have in me.
- You said that long-range shots are your main advantage. Are these shots planned in advance, or is there an element of surprise here?
- I think there are several factors here. Because a good shot is not just improvisation. A lot depends on the movement of the ball, interaction with the team, and the ability to read the game. Sometimes you understand in advance where you can find an empty zone, and sometimes you have to make a decision in a split second. It all depends on the course of the game, but you are constantly looking for opportunities.
- In your opinion, what did the team lack in the semi-final against "Absheron Lions"?
- In some moments, we lacked stability and concentration. In the play-off stage, every mistake is of great importance. The opponent took advantage of their chances very well. But despite the defeat, I believe that this experience will help "Neftchi" to become even stronger and fight for the cup in the future.
- What do you remember the most?
- Probably the atmosphere at home games and several important victories we won during the season. You experience special emotions when you feel the support of the fans and understand that the team is truly one.
- What are your future plans? Where do you plan to continue your career?
- I want to rest a bit now. Then, together with my agent, we will review the options. I am open to various offers and want to take the next step, play at a high level, and continue to develop as a basketball player.
