"Winning three medals with six athletes is a great result."
These words were said by Togrul Asgarov, who is acting as the head coach of the Azerbaijani national team consisting of girls who won one gold and two silver medals at the U-23 European Championship held in Zrenjanin, Serbia.
He said that he was satisfied with his team's performance.
"Gunay Gurbanova won a gold medal. We also expected this result from Ruzanna Mammadova. She fought with determination. She had fallen a little behind because she had knee surgery three months ago. But she showed true character in this competition. She just lost in the final due to a momentary mistake. Her opponent had also won silver in the world and U-23 European Championships among adults. We were also very happy that Gultakin Shirinova won a medal after the injury. As you know, there is not as much mass in women's wrestling as in men's. The Federation is doing its best for this. If we have more girls in a short time, our results will be better," he said in a statement to AZERTAC.
T. Asgarov also spoke about future plans: "We have one month until the European Championship to be held in Albania. During this period, we will hold two training camps. One of them will be abroad. I believe that Ruzanna will win a gold medal this time. She has one more year to compete in the youth. Jala Aliyeva, Ruzanna Mammadova and Gunay Gurbanova have a greater chance of winning an Olympic license. Of course, my other athletes also have this potential. Among them, I can mention the names of Elnura Mammadova, Gultakin Shirinova and Birgul Sultanova."
