The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has stated that the full readability of the start number is the direct responsibility of each athlete, and all violations of the regulations, including those committed by Armenian athlete Mikaelyan, are seriously considered within the framework of the existing rules.
This was reported to Idman.Biz exclusively in the FIS communications department.
The statement was presented as a commentary on the situation with Armenian skier Mikael Mikaelyan.
It is recalled that the incident occurred on December 31, 2025, during the World Cup stage in Italy. When entering the starting area, Mikaelyan covered the word "Azerbaijan" on his racing uniform with tape. The organizers of the stage considered this a violation of the rules, as the official marking of the start number was changed. As a result, the athlete was fined, but he was allowed to continue participating in the competition, and no disqualification was applied.
It should be noted that in May 2025, FIS signed a sponsorship agreement with the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Within the framework of this partnership, Azerbaijan has become one of the official sponsors of FIS, and the country's name has been included in the mandatory sponsor marking on the starting numbers of athletes in competitions held under the auspices of the federation, including World Cup stages and world championships.

After that, the President of the Armenian Ski Federation, Gagik Sargsyan, stated during a live broadcast on social networks that the federation applauded the actions of its athlete and would fully pay the fine intended for the athlete. Mikael Mikaelyan, in turn, stated that he intends to continue covering up the name of our country on his racing uniform in the future.
After these statements, Idman.Biz contacted the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) to obtain an official position.
The international federation responded with a detailed explanation of the regulations.
"Ensuring the full visibility of the start number is the responsibility of each participant. Start numbers must be fully legible on both the front and back," the FIS communications department said.
FIS also announced the amount of the fine that the Armenian skier had to pay for his behavior at the World Cup stage in Italy.
"On December 31, 2025, Mr. Mikael Mikaelyan was fined 100 Swiss francs (212 manats) for violating the competition regulations."
FIS's general approach to disciplinary measures was also highlighted separately. The organization stated that they are responsible for ensuring adherence to the principles of fairness and uniform application of the regulations.
"Sanctions for violations of international competition rules may vary depending on the severity of each specific case. Measures can range from official warnings to financial penalties, and in severe cases, disqualification," FIS noted.
After that, our editorial office asked a clarifying question about what steps FIS plans to take if the athlete continues similar behavior. Given the Armenian side's public statements and the symbolic amount of the fine, such a possibility cannot be ruled out.
In its second response, FIS refused to speak in advance about specific sanctions, emphasizing that each case is considered individually.
"It would be irresponsible for FIS to speculate in advance about possible scenarios. We will act by adhering to the rules strictly, fairly and consistently, taking into account the severity and specific circumstances of each individual case," the federation said.
